Give Us This Day

Proper Toast
Ambrosia

Our Father,
who art in heaven,

hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done;
on earth
as it is in heaven.

Give us this day
our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power
and the glory,
for ever and ever.
Amen.

When the hospital chaplain at Long’s Peak Hospital (Bruce Rippe) said this prayer with me it had new, much-more-poignant meaning since I had not eaten at all in five days at the time. The fourth ‘petition’ for our ‘daily bread’ hit me squarely between the eyes and the awful truth came home quite poignantly: without food, there is nothing.

At home, in the middle of my first (teensy tiny) bite of scorched toast (my favorite food on earth), that line rang out like a Buddhist temple bell in my mind.

Ok, big man, I feel ya, both hands.

The Wikipedia entry on this prayer is fascinating.
