‘For My Father’ - tribute to George P. Wray

I am a freelance web developer specializing in websites built using CSS (Cascading StyleSheets) and WordPress.

I also offer on-site training in a number of software packages as well as general web troubleshooting and on-site Apple Macintosh training and support.

My friends and students dubbed me ‘The Guru’
and it amuses me endlessly -
so much so that I created this graphic:

I try to have a good sense of humor about life and myself… it helps.

About

M. Douglas Wray - Mac Web GuruContrary to some reports, I am not a ’self-proclaimed’ guru. Friends, co-workers and students dubbed me with this title, which amuses me to an enormous degree - so, of course, I’m working it like a day job.

It is no small thing to have the title ‘guru’ conferred upon oneself. I have not taken this title - many have come to me for assistance and it is they who bestowed this great honor.

When I was first referred to as ‘a guru’ I felt it incumbent upon me to know what this title actually meant. In it’s original usage, it referred to spiritual teachers, which I do not profess to be. Etymologically, the term Guru means one who gives light by eradicating the darkness of ignorance. According to philosophical Hindu texts, Guru means dispeller (gu) of darkness (ru). I prefer that definition.

I’ve done a fair bit of teaching and discovered that it is one of the most difficult things to do, requiring great patience and compassion. I have come to understand that a student learns for themself, not me. My duty to the student is not to make them measure up to some standard of my devising, but rather to help dispell the shadows in their own knowledge. Together we journey into the darkness of the unknown and often the student teaches the teacher. That has been a tremendous gift to me and I thank all my students for what they’ve taught me.

Free CSS Templates

These templates may be used for any purpose whatsoever without credit or attribution - although I’d love a mention if you feel such is deserved. I offer them as learning tools to any webmaster attempting to learn CSS. NOTE: some of these templates require server-side includes to function properly. If you don’t know what those are, go here for more information. Your host may or may not support SSIs. Also, these templates will not work ‘local’ unless you have your editor set up to resolve the SSIs. You can simply replace the include statements with the referenced file’s contents, but it defeats the purpose and reduces the maintainability. I h3ly encourage you to learn what Server-Side Includes are (not to mention the other Server-Side Directives) and how they can improve the overall ease-of-maintenance of your sites. And now, the Templates!

Template 1 - Tabbed Top Navigation with automatic highlighting

This is my first attempt at templating a CSS-structured site that automatically indicates the user’s location by changing the appearance of the top and left tabs. The highlighting is driven by JavaScript that checks for the presence of keywords in the document title. A little study of the script calls vs the document You’ll note this template proudly bears the W3C flags for Valid CSS and Valid HTML. These flags are true for the template only as delivered - you should revalidate your site pages to ensure compliance with standard.
