When I first started communicating with Marilyn (who was to become my wife) I realized that I had found someone who really spoke to my inner child, which had faded to a near-wraith after seventeen years of marriage to an alcoholic.
As I ‘cleaned house’ metaphorically, I discovered that my heart was made the way it was by all the experiences I’d had. Some good. Some terrible. Sting calls it ‘…the shape of my heart…’ but to me it’s a house.
My father was not always my best friend – he still isn’t. However, he did give me a lot of good advice and was as good a father as he could be. He never lied to me or backed away from a challenge in life. Here’s my thanks for that.
“Keep the homefires burning” took on a whole new meaning for me as I struggled through a career change. I faced a number of people who were point-blank evil bastards and wanted nothing less than to crush my spirit. Something in me took fire and burns to this day.
